Star Tribune from Minneapolis, Minnesota (2024)

1 3 lady MINNEAPOLIS MORNING TRIBUNE Feb. 28, 1964 It's Lake vs. Valley Tonight District 18 basketball eliminations open at four sites tonight with eight Lake Conference teams hoping to pull off another clean sweep over the eight Minnesota Valley Conference representatives. The schedule: At St. Louis Park p.m., Robbinsdale vs.

Shakopee; 9 p.m., Wayzata vs. Eden Prairie. At p.m., Waconia vs. Hopkins; 9:30 p.m., Orono vs. Minnetonka.

At p.m., Chaska vs. Bloomington; 9 p.m., Golden Valley vs. Richfield. At Wayzata 7:30 p.m., Edina- vs. Watertown; 9:30 p.m., St.

Louis Park vs. University High, Last year, the Lake erased all eight Valley entrants in the first round. It appears they will be more hard-pressed to do so this year. Golden Valley, the MVC champion 15-1 record, takes on the Lake's eighthranked team in Richfield (5-12), a winner Tuesday night over Mound in subdistrict playoff. Eden Prairie, another strong Valley team, is accorded a good opportunity to sideline Wayzata, team that finished 5-11 in the Lake.

Orono, University High and Chaska would seem to be the other MVC teams with the best chance of breaking through. Shakopee sends the Valley's new scoring champ against Robbinsdale in Wayne Engelen. Chaska's Bob Roepke 1 is another top Valley scorer. The night's most lop-sided match, likely, will occur at Wayzata when Watertown, with a 1-17 record, hosts Edina, Lake kingpin at 18-0. Michigan to Construct $3.5 Million Fieldhouse ANN ARBOR, Mich.

(AP) A fieldhouse costing near $3.5 5 million Thursday was approved for construction at the University of Michigan by the school's Board of Regents. The building, with tentative seating for 12,000 to 15,000, is expected to be ready for the 1965-66 basketball season. It also will be used for other sports and campus activities. MINNEHAHA, LUTHER, WESSINGTON WIN Blake Heroics Tip Breck in Overtime A 55-foot shot in the final second of regulation time rescued Blake Thursday and opened the way to a 75-73 overtime victory over Breck in the Independent School invitational basketball tournament. Joining Blake as opening round victors were Minnehaha, New Ulm, Luther and Wessington Springs, S.D.

Mike Green's odds-defying field goal in the final second of regulation play came after Breck had apparently locked up the game. Breck held a 69-67 lead and a man at the free throw line to shoot. A lane violation, however, gave Blake the ball and time for the desperation shot. Green then hit four straight points in overtime and, Breck pulled even, Mark Roberts scored with 18 seconds left to win for Blake. In the other game at Min- Twin Cities Duo Gains Women's Tennis Finals Special to the Minneapolis Tribune BROOKLINE, Mass.

A Twin Cities duo, Belmar Gunderson and Mrs. Warren Swanson, Thursday advanced to the doubles finals of the National Women's Indoor Tennis Championships. 'They defeated Carole Wright, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Lena Green, Rockville Center, N.Y., 10-8, 6-3, and will meet Mary Ann Eisel, St. Louis, and Kay Hubbel, Conway, N.H., in today's title match.

Miss Gunderson, from Philadelphia, and now a physical education instructor at the University of Minnesota, also will compete in another title match today teaming with Chauncey Steele 3rd in the mixed doubles. In singles play, Miss Gunderson, seeded second, lost to Miss Eisel 6-4, 6-3. Miss Eisel will face No. 1-seeded Miss Wright today. CLASSIC SCORES THURSDAY 1:00 P.M.
