Bagnell Dam downstream flooding to intensify (1)

Flooding downstream of Bagnell Dam on the Osage River is expected to intensify later this week as Ameren Missouri plans to open floodgates to discharge water flowing in from Truman Dam.

May of 2019 has been a record setting month for inflow into to Truman Lake.

Levels on lake of the Ozarks are expected to maintain at approximately 659 above sea level, however the U. S Corps of Engineers will begin releasing water from Truman on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Ameren is warning property owners downstream on the Osage River to take necessary precautions and prepare for rising flood waters.

On Monday, the Corps reported Harry S. Truman Lake is 82 percent occupied leaving minimal space to store additional flood waters. Due to ongoing precipitation in the region, theCorps will begin releases from the Harry S. Truman Dam by midweek.

According to information provided by the Corp, releases are currently only being made through the Harry. S. Truman Dam powerhouse. Truman operators are closely coordinating with the National Weather Service and Ameren. May 2019 has been the second highest monthly inflow to Harry S. Truman Lake in project history.

As pools atCorpslakes rise, including Truman, additional personnel including park rangers, maintenance personnel, andengineersfrom the Kansas City District Office routinely inspect the dam, the spillway, the powerhouse, and other important structures. These inspections are part of our procedure as lake levels rise to ensure public safety and continued performance of the dam. All dams are structurally sound and are preforming as designed.

Earlier this year, the Corps and Benton County Emergency Management implemented an emergency warning system for Truman Dam.

WHAT TO DO:

•Be vigilant of the safety risks associated with high water such as floating debris or obstructions covered by high water which can create dangerous boating conditions.

•Expect the unexpected and be prepared. Do not drive or walk into flood waters on the road. Any time you come to a flooded road turn around. Never enter standing or moving water to cross a road.

•Wear a lifejacket when on the water.
