Prawn toast or shrimp toast is a hot appetizer recipe that is crispy, crunchy and very delicious. It is cut into little triangles and made with minced shrimp, coated in sesame seeds and fried. Serve it hot with sweet chili sauce.
I had this dish at a Chinese restaurant only find out that it also has its roots in Hong Kong. Having said this the recipe doesn’t seem very different from each other. The main factor here is that they are both delicious. I love the simplicity of the recipe and how easy it is to make. These toasts are a quick hot appetizer that you can prepare in little time. So let us begin.
What is prawn toast?
Prawns toast is also known as shrimp toast and it is sliced bread topped with seasoned shrimp mince, coated in sesame seeds and fried. This is a fantastic hot appetizer to make for parties, game nights or as a starter for a dinner. I love serving it with side salad to make it a wholesome meal.
Whats prawn toast made of?
To make this prawn toast we need slice bread, fresh prawns, green onion, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, lime juice, egg white, coriander, soya sauce, sesame seed oil, white pepper powder, salt and sesame seeds. I have shallow fried these toasts, making for a golden and crispy outcome. You can also deep fry them or bake them or air fry them.
What equipment do you need to make this prawn toast?
I have made the prawn mince mixture in a food processor, it helps grind everything into a fine paste. You can use a grinder as well, alternatively you can chop it finely with a sharp knife. We need a bread knife to cut the toasts into triangles. Also, we need a large pan to fry the toasted, I like to let the excess oil drain out on a wire rack.
Can you make this with any mince?
I have tried this recipe with chicken mince, turkey mince and pork mince which works well. I have tried it with a red meat mince.
How to make these prawn toasts?
In a food processor add the green onions, ginger, garlic and blend until coarse. Add the fresh prawns, egg white, soya sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, coriander and blend again. Once the paste is smooth lets get the bread and oil ready. Slice the bread into triangles. Pour oil into a large pan and let it get hot. Spread 1 tbsp worth of the prawn mixture onto a sliced piece of bread and spread it out evenly. Press the bread (prawn mince side up) into the sesame seeds and pat it with your palms to secure it. Repeat up all the mixture is spread over the bread. Fry in the oil sesame side down or bread side down. We want to cook the shrimp side down for 2 – 3 minutes until the mixture is golden and cooked through. Flip over and cook on the bread side for 30 seconds until golden and crispy.
How to cook these prawn toasts?
If you are shallow frying these toasts they take 2-3 minutes on the prawn side to cook and another 30 seconds on the bread side. If you are deep frying these toasts they will take 2 minutes in total. If you are pan frying these toasts they will take 3-4 minutes too cook on the prawn side and 1 minute on the bread side. If you are baking them then, place them on a tray and bake in a preheated oven at 180℃ for 10-15 minutes. If you are going to air fry these toasts you can cook them at 180℃ for 7-9 minutes.
Storing and serving these prawn toasts?
Once these toasts are made you must serve them hot. I like to assemble these toasts and store in the fridge in an air tight container for up to 1 day. These are best served hot with lime wedges, soya sauce and sweet chili sauce.
