According to an online news report on autoweek.com, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a safety investigation concerning Bronco’s 2.7-liter engines. The NHTSA investigation was initiated after reports of catastrophic engine failures. The NHTSA is investigating all 2021 model-year Ford Bronco sports utility vehicles after receiving reports of valves dropping into their respective cylinders and resulting in serious internal engine damage. This defect affects approximately 25,000 Ford Broncos that the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6.

Ford’s Bronco has been one of the auto manufacturer’s most significant revivals, but experts believe the vehicle is facing some serious issues. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2021 Ford Bronco 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 investigation focuses on the engine’s valvetrain. The defect can cause the engine to fail, leading to accidents. The core issue appears to be the valve keepers, which fail to lock the valve spring retainer to the valve. When the valve keepers fail, the valve can drop into the combustion cylinder causing substantial damage.

The NHTSA investigation is not a recall. The NHTSA is looking into the issue, its frequency, and safety concerns of the alleged defect. There have been 26 Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) complaints concerning the mechanical issue. Although this is a small number of complaints, the problem might affect more than 25,000 Bronco owners, according to the NHTSA.

The turbocharged V6 is also used in other motor vehicles, such as the Ford F-150 pickup truck. However, the NHTSA investigation only concerns Ford Broncos. This investigation could eventually lead to a recall. However, until the NHTSA investigation is completed, no one knows how many vehicles could be recalled back to the manufacturer.
