The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2021 Ford Bronco 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 investigation focuses on the engine’s valvetrain. The defect can cause the engine to fail, leading to accidents. The core issue appears to be the valve keepers, which fail to lock the valve spring retainer to the valve. When the valve keepers fail, the valve can drop into the combustion cylinder causing substantial damage.
The NHTSA investigation is not a recall. The NHTSA is looking into the issue, its frequency, and safety concerns of the alleged defect. There have been 26 Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) complaints concerning the mechanical issue. Although this is a small number of complaints, the problem might affect more than 25,000 Bronco owners, according to the NHTSA.

During the preliminary investigation, the regulator found out the likely culprit was an engine valve that was made from material that could become too fragile if overheated during the manufacturing process. This would cause the valves to break apart during operation and damage the engine.
According to Ford, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost might go kaput due to interference between the valves and pistons. The root cause comes in the form of valve keepers not holding the retainer in place, allowing the spring to detach from the valve, leading to engine lockup.
Ford also had to face an ecoboost class action lawsuit regarding the 2.0 EcoBoost problems. This lawsuit alleges that Ford was aware of the engine issues but failed to adequately inform customers or provide effective solutions.
All are from the 2021 and 2022 model years and are equipped with 2.7-liter or 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engines. The agency says that under normal driving conditions the engines can lose power due to catastrophic engine failure related to allegedly faulty valves.
