1. This is a nice and easy recipe that gets better the longer it sits. I used apple cider vinegar and added celery seeds. It was a little too sweet for out taste, so I added a little extra vinegar. Instead of a bagged mix, I used fresh shredded green cabbage and carrots. Thanks for the recipe!

 2. Very good and easy too. Similar to grocery store coleslaw but SO much better. I used all Splenda (I'm diabetic) and added some garlic powder and some onion powder to taste.

 3. WAY too sweet!
This is an OK basic recipe, but even with the sugar cut down by one third, the recipe was still so sweet that I had to double the other ingredients to make it edible as cole slaw and not as a dessert. Even with a double recipe, the sugar was excessive. a scant quarter cup is PLENTY sweet enough.

Adding horse radish or onion or celery seeds or bacon bits or some other tasty flavors to make it your own is a really good idea. So try this one and build on it and you might REALLY have something.

 4. I made this tonight to go along with some buffalo wings(different recipe) and it KILLED!! I did throw a little celery salt in there, but its a killer standard recipe.

 5. Really good recipe. I usually use dill pickle juice but ran out and used straight cider vinegar. I accidentally used 1/3 cup sugar and it was just about perfect!

 1. ...added horseradish, added garlic salt, cut back on sugar (1/4 cup), 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar.

 2. I have made this recipe many, many times and everyone loves it. What I have done is to substitute honey for the sugar and used almond milk instead of regular milk. Both give the slaw a sweeter taste. I also put in small pieces of pineapple.

 3. This slaw was pretty easy to make but I added a few things to the recipe and also have a few changes I would make if I were to make this again (which I will). I added garlic and onion powder as one reviewer had suggested. I also used soy milk instead of milk because it was what I had around and I also used apple cider vinegar instead of regular vinegar.
Now for some changes for next time, I would definitely use a little less mayo because I felt that this slaw was a bit too creamy for my liking. I think next time I would just add as I go so that I can control how much mayo is in the slaw. I would also use less sugar than 1/4 cup (I used sugar substitute to help cut the calories). I think I would probably use 1/8 cup and then add more sugar to taste, if needed.
Other than that, this slaw taste great with anything, from BBQs to tacos, this can really add just a little something added to your meals. Would make again (with my modifications).

 4. This was so perfect and easy to make. It's pretty close to the cold slaw my mother had made for years (of course she doesn't use a recipe, just a dab of this and a dab of that, but otherwise the same ingredients). I did use cream instead of milk to make it a little creamier, otherwise, it was great. Thanks so much. I prefer using a recipe to cook so it turns out the same every time.

Easy Go-To Coleslaw Recipe - Food.com (2024)

FAQs

Why is KFC coleslaw so good? ›

Fresh ingredients are key to a good slaw, and KFC does alright for a fast food restaurant. You won't find any wilted cabbage pieces, and the carrots are nice and hard as well. What's more, KFC finely dices everything so you don't have to chew that much, and all the flavors and textures blend perfectly.

Why soak cabbage in salt water? ›

The salt will draw out excess water from cabbage while helping preserve the crispiness. After letting it sit for an hour or two, rinse it with water to remove the salt. Drain and dry the cabbage with paper towels, gently pressing to release excess water. Repeat with more paper towels as the water is absorbed.

Why do you put salt on cabbage for coleslaw? ›

Salting the cabbage, carrot, and onion purges excess moisture that would otherwise turn the slaw into a soupy mess. Including sugar (another osmosis-inducing ingredient) balances the flavor. Limiting the purge to five minutes keeps the cabbage crunchy.

How to stop homemade coleslaw from going watery? ›

Preventing watery slaw

To prevent this tear-jerking weeping effect, a little salt goes a long way. Place your shredded cabbage into a colander or a large mesh strainer over a large bowl. Sprinkle one teaspoon per pound of cabbage over the shreds and toss to evenly distribute the salt throughout the cabbage.

Why did KFC stop selling coleslaw? ›

The fast food chain was forced to stop selling its coleslaw tubs when a supply issue meant the slaw would have to be served up without the dressing. “We are currently experiencing a supply issue with our KFC coleslaw dressing,” a KFC spokesperson said. The slaw is made up of cabbage and carrots coated in mayonnaise.

What is the unhealthiest thing at KFC? ›

Worst: Extra Crispy

Here's where "crispy" is a code word for "steer clear." The extra crispy recipe is by far the least healthful of KFC's chicken options. A single breast will set you back 530 calories, 35 grams of fat, and 6 grams of saturated fat.

Why do you put baking soda in cabbage? ›

Baking soda does help green vegetables retain color, but it causes undesirable color changes in red cabbage—it turned blue. The science can be distilled to this: Adding baking soda to cooking water makes it slightly alkaline, which stabilizes the green color of chlorophyll.

Why do you put vinegar in cabbage when boiling it? ›

Green is the heartiest variety; it takes well to all cooking methods. Red can turn a funny blue color when cooked, so it's best used raw. If you do want to cook it, add a touch of acid like lemon juice or vinegar to lessen the effect.

Why wash cabbage with vinegar? ›

Adding vinegar to the water (1/2 cup distilled white vinegar per 1 cup water), followed by a clean water rinse, has been shown to reduce bacterial contamination but may affect texture and taste. After washing, blot dry with paper towels or use a salad spinner to remove excess moisture.

What can I add to store bought coleslaw to make it taste better? ›

Adding horse radish or onion or celery seeds or bacon bits or some other tasty flavors to make it your own is a really good idea.

What is traditional coleslaw made of? ›

What is traditional coleslaw made of? Traditional coleslaw is little more than shredded cabbage and a creamy dressing. This recipe adds a bit more flavor with shredded carrots and onion. The creamy dressing is made with mayonnaise, sugar, cider vinegar, salt, and pepper, for a just right tangy-sweet flavor.

How do you reduce the bitterness in coleslaw? ›

For every 2 cups of sliced cabbage, mix it with about a teaspoon of salt. Kenji Lopez- Alt also found it was beneficial to add a teaspoon of sugar too. Both salt and sugar promote osmosis, which draws out any water from the cabbage. And the sugar can balance out some of the bitterness in the cabbage.

Should cabbage be washed before making coleslaw? ›

Cabbage. The outer layer isn't going to be eaten—the leaves are tougher and undesirable to many—so why wash cabbage? There's a good reason: Worms or other insects could be inside the cabbage, so to be safe, follow these steps for cleaning and washing it.

Should you wash bagged coleslaw? ›

Bagged or ready-to-eat, fresh-cut produce

If the product is not labeled "washed," "triple washed," or "ready-to-eat," it must be washed before eating.

What are the benefits of KFC coleslaw? ›

It's low in calories, high in vitamin C, and loved by many for its creamy and tangy flavor. With KFC coleslaw, you can enjoy a guilt-free and versatile side dish that's gluten-free, low in cholesterol, and rich in antioxidants. It's a colorful, crunchy, and healthy addition to any meal.

Why is KFC original recipe so good? ›

KFC Uses A Special Signature Blend Of Herbs And Spices

A big part of what makes KFC's chicken so tasty is its highly coveted blend of herbs and spices. The restaurant's chicken is savory and herbaceous with lingering notes of pepper. The flavoring is simple but it hits all the right notes.

Why does KFC taste better cold? ›

Those who eschewed heating up their chilled chicken in favor of chowing down right away would have seen how the chicken's breading remained crisp while the interior deepened in flavor. When fried chicken starts to cool down, the skin contracts and bonds itself to the meat.

How many days is KFC coleslaw good for? ›

Make Ahead and Storing Leftovers

Then combine for a fresh batch. How long does KFC Coleslaw last in the fridge? Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within 3 days. Always stir before serving.
