Welcome to the start of a remarkable school year! As the principal of WMHS, I am thrilled to extend my warmest greetings to each and every one of you. I hope this letter finds you rejuvenated and eager to embark on a journey of growth, discovery, and endless possibilities.

At WMHS, we believe in fostering a vibrant and nurturing environment where students can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated team of educators is committed to providing a quality education that inspires curiosity, ignites passion, and cultivates the skills necessary for success in the ever-changing world.

Dear Wildcat Students and Families,

As the new academic year approaches, I am honored to introduce myself as the Assistant Principal of WMHS. It is with great enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility that I take on this role, and I am excited to work alongside our exceptional faculty, staff, and students. I have worked in the Westport Community Schools for the last six years as a math teacher and I am excited for this opportunity.

As the Assistant Principal, it is my privilege to assist in creating a positive and nurturing learning environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated team of educators is committed to providing a high-quality education that will empower you to reach your full potential. In addition to academic excellence, we value the development of character, leadership skills, and good citizenship. We encourage you to actively participate in the various clubs, activities, and sports teams available at our school. Skylha Vaillancourt and Austin Mackay are two seniors from the Class of 2024.

Westport High School - Westport Community Schools (6)

They are both members of the Westport Fire Explorers and have been for four years.

Skylha is the BattalionChief and she supervises all of the explorers, organizes events and runs all of the meetings.

Austin is the Training Supervisor. He teaches theexplorers new skills.

Skylhaand Austin are both First Responder Certified and are currently in an EMT Certification course run by Fall River EMS Education Center. They are taking thecourse on their own time while completing a full schedule of classes here at Westport High School.

Austin feels his experiences as a Westport Fire Explorer have givenhim extensive knowledge in the fields of firefighting and EMS and Skylhafeels she has an advantage for her chosen career path.

They are both workingtowards a career of Firefighter/Paramedic.

Avery Avila completed the Harvard University's Future Doctor Program in February.

This program was offered to our students that are considering a career in medicine and was paid for by Westport Community Schools. Avery accepted the offer and was able to learnaboutGenetics, OrganicChemistry, DNA and its chemical makeup as well as Duplication.

Over two weekends in late January and early February, Avery participated in online lessons. She worked with Harvard's undergraduate medical program and graduates. Other high school studentswere from Romania, Canada, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, India as well as other areas of the United States.

Avery's final project had to be on a genetic disorder and her group chose Albinism.

Avery is a top ranked senior at Westport High School who wants to be a doctor in particular anesthesiology. She is in AP courses, an athlete, a member of many clubs and a kind, strong young woman. She added this program to her list of accomplishments and we are extremely proud of her as she is a phenomenal representative of Westport Community Schools.

Linsey Anne Govoni Scholarship:

Senior Robert Wagner is the first recipient of the Linsey Anne Govoni Scholarship. The scholarship was created by an alumni whoat this time would like to remain nameless. Students who have applied to colleges/universities outside of the United States were eligible for the scholarship. It is worth $200. Ms Govoni was a Lundin Links jazz musician who died suddenly at the age of 42.

Robert has been accepted to the University of New Brunswick and is considering attending in the Fall of 2024.

On Tuesday Oct 24th, students from grades 8-11 who expressed an interest in learning about careers in the judicial system were given a warm welcome by staffat the Fall River Justice Center. Students were takeninto a courtroom to meet a judge, a magistrate, probation, court officers, and an assistant DA. They learned how everyone entered their careers, what they are responsible for and what types of experiences they have had.

Students were also allowed in a live courtroom where they heard various cases and arraignments.

The experiencewas extremely informative.

Seniors and their parents met on Wednesday evening Oct 4th to receive information regardingfinancial aid and the college process. Elizabeth Connelly Sylvia from the Educational Opportunity Center and Leslie Ruel, guidance counselor met with parents to discuss the new FAFSA, the CSS Profile, Scholarships, the Common Application along with the process in completing the forms and what happens once a student is accepted to college.

Ms. Connelly Sylvia is available to Westport students thanks to a federal grant to assist in completing the financial aid forms and streamline the process. Mrs. Ruel is available for any and all questions around the college processfrom start to finish.

On Thursday, Feb 15th seniors interested in applying to Bristol Community College were able to participate in our 5th BCC Palooza. Seniors met with admissions and financial aid to completetheir on-site application and acceptance and then sign up to complete their FAFSA and they can make an appointment for assistance in FAFSA completion.

This year 21 seniors met with the Bristol Community College staff. This is a fantastic program which relieves the stress of applying to college for many of our seniors.
