Dallas and Temple, Texas – Baylor Scott & White Health's commitment to safety and quality is affirmed today as U.S. News & World Report releases its 2021-2022 "Best Hospitals" list. Once again, Baylor Scott & White is the most awarded not-for-profit health system in Texas with a total of 27 medical centers recognized — more than ever before. Two of the System's flagship academic medical centers were ranked among the top ten in the state.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or common elective procedures.

Ranked Among the Nation's Top Hospitals for Specialty Care
For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

Four Baylor Scott & White hospitals were nationally ranked or recognized as "High Performing" in at least one specialty, meaning they are among the top 10% in the nation.

  • Baylor University Medical Center: #36 nationally in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, #41 nationally in Gynecology, and #47 nationally in Orthopedics; high-performing medical specialties, recognized as being in the top 10% of the nation, include Cancer, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Pulmonology, and Urology
  • Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano:#40 nationally for Cardiology & Heart Surgery

In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognizes hospitals that excel across multiple areas of care including specialty and common procedures and conditions. This year, U.S. News ranked Baylor Scott & White's flagship academic medical centers in Dallas and Temple among the top ten in the state:

Twenty-Six Facilities Recognized as "High Performing" for Common Procedures & Conditions
The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as risk-adjusted outcome rates, volume, quality of nursing and other care-related indicators. This year, U.S. Newsadded seven new rating categories, including Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion), Heart Attack, Diabetes, Hip Fracture, Kidney Failure (replacing Nephrology), Pneumonia and Stroke.

"This year's expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need," said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today."

In total, 26 Baylor Scott & White hospitals received a "High Performing" rating in at least one of the seventeen common procedures and conditions evaluated — a feat achieved by fewer than a third of all hospitals in the U.S. Those hospitals include:
