This past Memorial day, I was struck by a profound sense of awe for the work that we do in the cemetery, funeral and broader deathcare services. I reflected on the advances that technology has given us as we all work daily to accurately and respectfully remember our dead, record where they are and who they were. This work is the essence of Memorial Day for military and non-military families and it defines us as humans. Not long ago at all the de facto “memory bank” and recording of our family members and loved ones exclusively sat in physical cabinets within records rooms or vaults furnished with files ofdisjoined maps, card files and binders of records. To find information about a deceased person at a cemetery required a experienced professional with lots of time to thumb through paper files, pulling out documents, reading, understanding, making copies of paper and then replacing those files once the research was complete. Though paper is still out there, times have changed and we don’t have the social patience for that system and all its flaws. While technology and digitization creates new sets of problems, the ease of recording and then finding information is accelerated and then given an error and loss “insurance plan” through back-ups and even duplicate storage systems that paper never had. For those of us in the business of technology and software, it is incredibly easy to forget how fundamentally beneficial our products can be to the staff and organizations who work in the field, but more importantly to the communities they serve and how far we have advanced from the days of paper. The work of digitizing and organizing burial records is the spirit of Memorial Day working at its best and a testament to a human endeavor and ministry to defeat death through remembering those that have died.

The Pioneering Work of Death DoulasOnce, we were all death doulas. Deep down, we still are. Before the Civil War, when embalming fallen soldiers to preserve them long enough to transport back home prompted the birth of the funeral industry in the U.S., we were all death doulas. I would argue that we still are. We’ve just forgotten our deeply rooted practice of connecting to the death process with all its power and mystery, and our intrinsic desire to hold close to our hearts the biophysical destiny of every living being.Read the article here:https://lnkd.in/gMdH_pkY

To celebrate National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day, #OGR caught up with members to chat about why they are so passionate for #FuneralService. Today, we talked to Geri Oliverie from Oliverie Funeral Home in Manchester, New Jersey: What made you become a funeral director? The social aspect, the gathering is so important to me. We all weave a thread in others’ life quilts. It’s nice to see the completed quilt and pay your respects to a life well lived. What is your greatest reward for being a funeral director? Growing as a compassionate person and helping others. Being a part of something larger and more important than me. Giving my family an example to help others.
