Tata Motors has the largest portfolio of SUVs with five-star safety rating.

The passenger vehicle (PV) industry is witnessing a couple of new trends right now. One is the unprecedented rise of the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment and the other is the growing awareness among customers about the safety aspect.
While India now has its own vehicle safety testing program, referred to as Bharat New Car Assessment Program or Bharat NCAP, several cars sold in our country have been tested by Global New Car Assessment Program or Global NCAP.

With the SUV segment reaching almost 50% of the PV market, we take a look at five SUVs on sale in India with the highest safety rating at Global NCAP.
Tata Safari
The new Tata Safari scored five stars in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories at Global NCAP. The flagship SUV of Tata Motors received 33.05 points out of 34 in the adult occupant protection and 45 points out of 49 in the child occupant protection.
The Safari comes with six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) as standard. It is priced between Rs 16.19 lakh and Rs 27.34 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Harrier
The new Tata Harrier and the new Tata Safari are built on the OMEGARC architecture, which is derived from Land Rover's D8 platform. Both SUVs scored similar stars and points in adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories at Global NCAP. These two SUVs got a five-star safety rating at Bharat NCAP also.
The Harrier sits in the price range of Rs 15.49 lakh to Rs 26.44 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Nexon
The new Tata Nexon is another SUV from the homegrown auto major to have scored five stars in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories at Global NCAP, with 32.22 points in the former and 44.52 points in the latter.
Even the Nexon comes with six airbags and ESC as standard. Its price starts at Rs 8.15 lakh and goes up to Rs 15.60 lakh (ex-showroom).
Volkswagen Taigun
The Volkswagen Taigun received a five-star safety rating at Global NCAP for both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection categories. While the SUV garnered 29.64 points in adult occupant protection, it got 42 points in child occupant protection.
While the Safari, Harrier and Nexon have six airbags and ESC as standard, the Taigun gets only two airbags as standard with ESC. The Taigun is priced between Rs 11.70 lakh and Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
Skoda Kushaq
The Skoda Kushaq has similar ratings to that of the Volkswagen Taigun at Global NCAP. Both are based on Volkswagen Group's India-specific MQB-AO-IN platform and form part of the India 2.0 project.
The Kushaq comes in the price range of Rs 11.89 lakh to Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
