Queen Elizabeth's death drives up prices of marmalade and corgis (2024)

Marmalade and Corgi prices soared in September following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who owned more than 30 corgis during her lifetime and publicly declared her love of preserved fruit. Demand for marmalade, which is usually made from citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons or limes, grew by almost 20 percent after the monarch's death on 8 September, according to data and consultancy firm, Kantar. "Marmalade sales really stood out this month. They increased by 18 per cent as the nation paid its respects to the queen," the company said.

Months before her death the Queen celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking her 70 years of reign. As a special celebration, she filmed a special short film British icon Paddington Bear. In the video, she had a brief chat with the famous bear over a cup of tea at Buckingham Palace. The video shows the Queen pull out her emergency marmalade sandwich which she always carried in her bag in case of an emergency, just as Paddington carries one in his hat.

Isabel II's marmalade came from the best oranges in Seville.

Queen Elizabeth would often eat marmalade made which oranges which came from Spanish city, Sevilla. It was Alfonso XIII -Don Felipe's great-grandfather-, and his wife, Queen Victoria Eugenia de Battenberg -granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom-, who started the tradition of sending the British Royal Family bitter oranges from the Royal Alcazar of Seville to make marmalade with them. In the 1980s the tradition was lost and it was Manuel del Valle, former warden of the Alcázar, who recovered the initiative in 2020.
