Do I need an appointment at the DMV NJ for registration renewal? ›

If you are ineligible to renew online, you must make an appointment to renew your registration in person. Appointments are required. You can also re-register a vehicle in NJ via U.S. mail.

Renew Online

To use this method, you'll need your previous license, your Social Security number, email address, a printer to print your receipt, and a credit card for payment. If you go online on the NJ MVC website, they guide you through the entire process.

License/ID and registration renewals that can't be completed online require an appointment. Renewals are not available on a walk-in basis. Customers should check the expiration date on their documents and renew early.

NJ Driver's License Grace Period

There is no grace period for New Jersey driver's licenses. You are allotted seven months prior to your license's expiration in order to complete a renewal. Once your license is expired, it is considered invalid, however, you will still be able to renew it in person.

Renewals: Renewing a Real ID can be done online.

Starting May 7, 2025, you must have a REAL ID compliant driver license/ID to fly within the U.S., unless you use a U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification. Until the deadline, a Standard New Jersey driver license is valid for air travel within the U.S.

Starting Nov. 2, the Hazlet MVC - located at 1374 Route 36 in Airport Plaza - will operate under an appointment-only schedule.
