300 miles need 18 gallons. For 600 miles (which can be seen to be twice of 300 miles), we would need twice the amount of fuel. So we need 18*2 = 36 gallons.
One advice is, when you get answers, think about it and see if it is reasonable. Have a physical grasp of the problem posed.
One other way of methodically answering it...
18 gallons for 300 miles. We can calculate, how many miles we can go for one gallon (Miles per Gallon = MPG).
MPG = 300/18 miles per gallon.
For 600 miles, we need 600/MPG = 600/(300/18) = (600/300)*18 = 36 gallons.
