Does Jason Momoa return as Duncan Idaho in Dune 2?
Jason Momoa does not return as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Two.
Spoiler Warning for the first film.
Momoa’s Duncan doesn’t appear in Dune 2 as he died in the first movie. He taught Paul Atreides in the past, being among the most skilled swordsmen. He was a great war tactician and an advisor to the Atreides family.
Unfortunately, he died fighting the Sardaukar forces, helping Paul and Jessica escape and reach the Fremen. So, he couldn’t have had a role to play in Part Two, since the film is based on the second half of Frank Herbert’s first Dune book, which did not include Idaho. However, he could be brought back in Dune 3.
Could Jason Momoa return in Dune: Part 3?
Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho could return in Dune: Part III, which is confirmed to be based on Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah.
Potential spoilers for Dune 3 inspired by “Dune Messiah” could follow.
Readers of Frank Herbert’s second book would know that Duncan is resurrected by the group called Bene Tleilax. They create humanoids known as “Ghola,” and Duncan is the first of them, brought back out of his own flesh. While he doesn’t initially retain his memories, he ultimately returns to his original form towards the end.
Since Denis Villeneuve has already stated that he will look to adapt the second Dune book in Part 3, the return of Momoa’s fan-favorite Dune character seems likely. Furthermore, Timothée Chalamet also told MTV that Momoa would be back. Chalamet said:
“Momoa will be back. Not in this one, but [in Dune Messiah]. Yeah, if you read the books… It’s so weird because they’re so secretive about the script and the trailer, but [the books] have been out there for 70 years.”
Considering Momoa’s ever-rising star power, it will be interesting to see how involved in the threequel he ends up being.
