allplants | Is Tofu Gluten-Free? (2024)

Tofu is a classic in many veganised dishes, but is it also suitable for those with gluten-free diets? Read on to find out the full lowdown.

What is tofu?

Tofu is a food made from soybeans. The soybeans are made into soya milk which is then curdled to form blocks of tofu, otherwise known as beancurd. It is said that tofu was created by a Chinese cook by accidentally curdling soy milk by adding nigari seaweed — and the rest is history. For a deeper look at the process of making tofu, check out our post here.

Is tofu suitable for people with gluten intolerance?

Yes, plain tofu is generally considered to be safe for those with gluten intolerances to eat, as the beancurd contains no glutenous grains. However, flavoured tofu such as sweet chilli or smoky tofu may not be suitable, as it may be marinated with soy sauce which is not gluten-free. It’s always best to check the label to confirm.

Is tofu safe for people with coeliac’s disease?

Yes, plain tofu is again generally safe for those with Coeliacs, as it contains no traces of gluten — though as always, check the label to be safe!
