How long is a permit valid for in NJ? ›

If you are a New Jersey resident, you must have a valid New Jersey driver's license or validated permit to operate a motor vehicle. First-time drivers must complete the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, which introduces driving privileges in phases, to obtain a basic license, requiring you to pass various tests.

The state of NJ has mandated that a 6 hour behind the wheel training program is the MINIMUM to be eligible to receive a learners permit for any person that is a16 years of age. Our 6 hour training provides a foundation for students to prepare them to begin supervised practice driving with their parent or guardian.

The course must be approved by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Defensive driving courses last six hours in person. Online courses have the same amount of content but can be done at your own pace. At the end of either course, all participants must pass an exam.

All 665 high schools that are licensed to teach driver education and administer knowledge tests have migrated to the online testing system this academic year.

To obtain a passing score, you must answer 80% or 40 of the 50 questions correctly.

New Jersey has several kinds of permits. The Early Bird Road: Student Learner's Permit has specific requirements for those who are 16 years of age. Complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction in a dual-controlled vehicle with a licensed driving instructor. However, here's the catch: permits are valid for 2 years, and if your permit expires, you'll need to renew it. The good news is, as long as you renew it within 3 years of the date it was issued, you won't need to retake the written test. But, if you let it go past 3 years, then yeah, you'll need to retake that test.
