Community Moderators

Moderators manage and monitor user-generated content on a client’s website or social mediaplatforms. You may be approving or deleting blog comments, answering questions in a forum, policing a chat room, responding to Tweets orFacebookcomments, generating buzz, providing for child safety, preventingscams, or similar and related tasks.

In some cases, no background insocial media managementis required. You just need to be social media savvy—you should understand various social media systems, use social media often, and understand hashtags, what kind of content trends, and so on. Freelance Writers & Editors

The internet wouldn’t be what it is today without tons and tons of useful and compelling content. And where there’s tons of content, there’sa huge need for writersand editors. YOU could be that writer (oreditor)—provided you have excellent grammar, can hit your deadlines, and have fantastic research and writing skills.

Like community management, formal education or abachelor’s degreeis not necessarily required forfreelancework-from-homegigs. You will likely need to provide a few writing samples with your application, but that shouldn’t be too hard to do provided you are starting in areas in which you have some knowledge and expertise. If you can’t manage to get a few publications under your belt before applying as afreelance writeror editor with a company, simply start a blog and publish your pieces there. You could even offer to do a guest post for a friend if you don’t want to set up an entire blog by yourself.

Nurses

Did you know that evennursescan work at home? It’s true! As long as you have a healthcare degree, are licensed for the state in question, and have recent clinical experience, you have the opportunity to find work from home. These positions are primarily triaged help desks fielding patient questions and assessing their symptoms. You may also find work as a consultant for ahealth insurancecompany or even with legal counsel. You often need prior experience for these, with emergency room and previous phone triage experience preferred.

At-Home Phone Agents

Perhaps the most plentiful and easy-to-landwork-at-home jobis as acall centeragent. Positions are available for both inbound and outbound calls. A company may hireemployeesorindependent contractorsdepending on the location and job requirements, so make sure you pay attention when reading thejob listings. There are some full-time andpart-time workopportunities out there. Most of these positions do require a quiet work environment. So if you have kids, these are best scheduled when the kids are in school or bed. You’ll also typically need a reliable computer with high-speed Internet access and a dedicated landline. Many of thesecustomer service agentjobs are available to you even if you don’t have much in the way of experience; when experience is required, they’re looking for customer service experience – the easiest experience to come by! Have you ever worked in retail or in food service? You’ve got customer service experience!

Search Engine Evaluators

The unique position ofa Search Engine Evaluatoris one that’s grown up with the expansion of the Internet – basically,search engine evaluatorshelp improvesearch engineresults by analyzing search strings and their results for relevancy and usefulness. Many of my readers love these positions as they provide a lot ofschedulingflexibilityand pay decently. That being said, positions are often project-based and can end abruptly. Some companies even cap the length of time you can spend working for them! Make sure you’ve got your eggs in more than onework-at-home jobbasket with this job type.

There are many opportunities forteachers to work from home, from actually teaching online courses to aside gigof becoming atutorfor children all over the world to keeping online office hours to advise university students. Becoming a virtual assistantis a great opportunity for those with a wide variety of skills or administrative experience. You can go into business for yourself, or apply to any of the VA companies I list below. As a VA, you’re not likely to be bored! The tasks for this online position can vary greatly. You may be appointment-setting, researching various topics, making phone calls on your client’s behalf, and more. Pay can also vary widely, based on the complexity of the job and the expertise required. Working with a VA company can make your pay more reliable by paying an hourly rate.
